Where are the best sandy beaches near London?

When the hustle and bustle of London life calls for a seaside escape, you don't need to jump on a plane to the Mediterranean, there's an abundance of beautiful sandy beaches on the Isle of Thanet, less than 2 hours by car or train from the city. 

Whether you are looking for a family holiday, an active weekend away, or just fancy ditching your home office for a few days, Broadstairs is the ideal location. 

Here is a rundown of our favourite beaches near our self-catering apartment.

Viking Bay

Viking Bay in Broadstairs is a charming crescent-shaped bay with golden sands and a picturesque backdrop of chalk cliffs. This beach is perfect for families and offers a mix of traditional seaside activities and modern amenities.



What to Do:


  • Building Sandcastles: The soft, golden sand is perfect for creating elaborate sandcastles.
  • Swimming: The gentle waters are ideal for a refreshing swim and perfect for families with young children.
  • Cafe Culture: Step off the beach and enjoy a drink in one of the many beachside cafes and bars.
  • Beach Amusements: During the summer there are kids amusements, including trampolines and bouncy castles on the beach. Also keep a look out for traditional Punch & Judy Shows on the beach during the school holidays. 
  • Live Music: Head to Victoria Gardens for daily live music throughout the summer months.



Margate Main Sands

A short drive from Broadstairs, or easily accessible by train or bus, is the hip town of Margate. 

Margate Main Sands combines traditional seaside charm with modern attractions. The wide sandy beach is perfect for building sandcastles, paddling in the sea, and enjoying classic beachside activities.

What to Do:

  • Dreamland: Visit the retro amusement park with rides, arcade games, and events.
  • Old Town: Wander through Margate’s Old Town, filled with quirky shops, cafes, and vintage stores.


Botany Bay

Botany Bay is a hidden gem on the Kent coast, famous for its dramatic white cliffs and golden sands. This beach offers a more secluded and tranquil experience, making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful escape. There is only a small car park directly by the beach, but plenty of free parking around the surrounding roads.

  • Beach Walks: Enjoy a scenic walk along the coast to discover other nearby bays.

Joss Bay

Joss Bay is a surfer's paradise, with a long stretch of sandy beach and consistent waves. This beach is popular with both beginners and experienced surfers, and there's the surf school for those wanting to learn.

Kingsgate Bay

Kingsgate Bay is a picturesque beach flanked by high white cliffs and the historic Kingsgate Castle. This secluded bay offers a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.

Stone Bay

Stone Bay is just a short walk from Viking Bay, offering a more tranquil alternative with expansive sands and rock pools. 

This beach is perfect for those looking for a quieter spot to relax and enjoy the sea. Don't miss the fabulous NāMAKA beach cafe - the best in the area. If you are feeling particularly active, look out for their morning yoga and fitness bootcamp sessions, advertised on their social media. 


 What to Do:

  • Rock Pooling: Explore the diverse marine life in the rock pools.
  • Sunbathing: Hire a sun lounger and relax on the wide sandy beach and soak up the sun.
  • Coastal Walks: Take a leisurely walk along the cliff-top paths with stunning views of the coastline.


Louisa Bay

Only accessible at low tide, Louisa Bay is a small, charming beach just around the corner from Viking Bay. It's less crowded and offers a peaceful spot to enjoy the seaside. 

Step-free access to the beach - and Viking Bay - is at the end of Granville Road, where our apartment is located. 


What to Do:

  • Beachcombing: Search for interesting shells and pebbles along the shore.
  • Swimming: Enjoy the calm waters for a relaxing swim, or take a dip in the tidal pool.
  • Cafe Visits: Stop by the nearby cafe for a refreshing snack or cocktail.

  The school holidays are fast approaching, but even if it is not beach weather, here are 5 fun things to do with the family on holiday in Broadstairs this half-term. 1.   Lillyputt Mini Golf Just a few hundred metres from  our apartment  is the wonderful Lillyputt Mini Golf.  A staple of Broadstairs - it's been here for over 100 years - the heritage mini golf course is based on Arnold Palmer's original designs.  The Garden Tea Room, serving hot and cold food, as well as ice creams, is a must visit, even if you don't fancy the golf.  Open Weekends and School holidays from 10am (weather permitting). 2.  The Escapement This award-winning, immersive escape room venue takes you on an exciting journey through intricately designed adventure puzzle quests, just like Crystal Maze.  The Escapement has been voted the UK’s Best Escape experience and has over 2,500 reviews on Tripadvisor. Best for Fish The Tartar Frigate Set in an historic building overlooking the harbour, The Tartar Frigate is a traditional pub and, in our opinion, one of the best fish restaurants in Kent. Kick back with alfresco drinks by the harbour or enjoy a meal in the restaurant with stunning views of Viking Bay. Best for Pizza Posillipo Our family's favourite place for Pizza in Broadstairs. With a cosy restaurant and a garden area that overlooks Viking Bay it's a great place to enjoy a meal or pick up a take-away pizza to enjoy in the beach.
