Where are the best sandy beaches near London? When the hustle and bustle of London life calls for a seaside escape, you don't need to jump on a plane to the Mediterranean, there's an abundance of beautiful sandy beaches on the Isle of Thanet, less than 2 hours by car or train from the city.  Whether you are looking for a family holiday, an active weekend away, or just fancy ditching your home office for a few days, Broadstairs is the ideal location.  Here is a rundown of our favourite beaches near our self-catering apartment .  Viking Bay Viking Bay in Broadstairs is a charming crescent-shaped bay with golden sands and a picturesque backdrop of chalk cliffs. This beach is perfect for families and offers a mix of traditional seaside activities and modern amenities. What to Do: Building Sandcastles:  The soft, golden sand is perfect for creating elaborate sandcastles. The Broadstairs Blues Bash was a blast this February, but don't worry if you missed it, there's always a festival going on in Broadstairs!  With Victoria Gardens (home to the Broadstairs Food Festival & Folk week) at one end of our road and a bus stop with quick links to Margate and Ramsgate, our self catering apartment is the perfect base from which to explore.   Here's a rundown of the main festivals coming up:  Broadstairs Food Festival - Spring and Autumn A celebration of food and drink. Hand-picked exhibitors from Kent, and the neighbouring counties, make these free festivals landmark events on the foodies' calendar.  Two festivals per year, one at Easter and one in Autumn.  Margate Summer Series at Dreamland - May to September From May to September 2024, Margate Summer Series returns to Dreamland. Acts will include JLS, Busted, Byan Adams, Status Quo, Paloma Faith, Manic Street Preachers and Suede, IDLES and Jess Glynne. Read more in our previo

Broadstairs is heaven for foodies. Here are just a few of our favourite restaurants to check out in town - let us know yours! Best for Fish The Tartar Frigate Set in an historic building overlooking the harbour, The Tartar Frigate is a traditional pub and, in our opinion, one of the best fish restaurants in Kent. Kick back with alfresco drinks by the harbour or enjoy a meal in the restaurant with stunning views of Viking Bay. Best for Pizza Posillipo Our family's favourite place for Pizza in Broadstairs. With a cosy restaurant and a garden area that overlooks Viking Bay it's a great place to enjoy a meal or pick up a take-away pizza to enjoy in the beach. Best for Fine Dining Stark The only Michelin-starred restaurant in Thanet, Stark is a modern and stylish restaurant, just stone's throw from our apartment. The intimate, 12 cover restaurant offers a set tasting menu with the option of matching wines for each course. Advance booking essential.  Best for Pub Grub The Charle
